In 'The Waiting Room' Gordon McNair is on his way from Edinburgh to Newcastle to
meet his hysterical young mistress, Veronica, who is pregnant. He intends to persuade her to have an abortion. On the way, due to his own impatience and fear that Veronica will tell his wife, Sarah, about the situation, Gordon crashes his car and is killed.
He awakens to find himself in a waiting room 'on the other
side'. He is to be evaluated before being assigned to an appropriate place. He is shown glimpses of his past life and is told that he will probably have to be 'rehabilitated'. However, it turns out that Gordon, although clinically dead, has been kept artificially alive on a life support system, and he returns to find himself in a hospital bed, paralysed from the neck down.
